You Can’t Begin At the Beginning

Because nothing ever begins. Everything flows organically out of the last thing. Life is fractal, emergent, plasmic, and messy. Every character has a story, has parents, who had their own stories, which influenced his. Every idea has ideas that influenced it. Every tale grows out of every tale you’ve ever read and heard and seen. Every story is a leaf on the story tree, where the roots go deep and the branches are many and many.

However, it is possible to pick a good place to start. Focus on the characters you actually want to write about. Choose the first significant thing that happens to them, which is part of the story you actually want to tell. Trim everything else. Now begin.
